Orange Bowl Regatta 2002
Orange Bowl Int`l Youth Regatta 2002 - Champions crowned
PORTSMOUTH, RI-(3-1-2003) Over 450 sailors from around the nation and eight countries came to Miami this week to compete for the title “Orange Bowl Champion” in seven classes. After four hard days of racing on Biscayne Bay, winners were crowned today at the Coral Reef Yacht Club.

The 2003 Orange Bowl Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta is the premiere youth regatta in the country. It is one of twenty events nationwide that comprises the USA Junior Olympic Sailing Program organized by US SAILING. Marine retailer West Marine is a national sponsor for the program. Gill North America is an official supplier.

The breeze picked up from the south for the final races on Biscayne Bay. Mayumi Roller from Puerto Rico extended her incredible 52-point lead to win the Optimist Green Fleet. After one final race in the Optimist fleets, there were no changes in the top finishers:
Red Fleet (age 13-15) Jesse Kirkland (Bermuda); Blue Fleet (age 11-12) Emily Dellenbaugh (Easton, CT); White Fleet (age 10 & under) Ivan Aponte-Taboas of Puerto Rico.

In the Club 420 Fleet, leaders Eric Storck and John Kempton extended their lead while the brother sister team of Adam and Melanie Roberts tied in points with Justin Law/Silja Lentnin and won the tied-breaker to take second place. Two brothers from Santa Barbara, Calif., won the 29er Fleet, Marcus and Alex Bernal. Chris Alexander of Coral Gables, FL held on to his lead and took the gold in the Radial Fleet. Greg Helias of Los Angeles, CA held on to the top slot in the Laser fleet.

The Arthur Merrill Trophy for the top Southern Florida Optimist sailor was presented to Niklas Anderson of Boca Raton. The Magnus Lijedahl Sportsmanship Trophy was awarded to Bernie Rosler of Franklin Heights, NJ.
